ROBOTIC SURGERY

Robotic assisted surgery is becoming one of the fastest growing tools utilised in surgery. The first surgical robotic system introduced into clinical practice in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand was in 2003. As of May 2023, there are 162 robotic platforms used across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Urology has been the leading specialty using Robotics followed by General Surgery. Robotic surgery allows for fine precision and dissection of tissues and is especially advantageous when performing pelvic dissection and intra-abdominal suturing.

Robotic assisted surgery is rapidly growing and a safe adjunct to surgery which is fast becoming standard of care in some aspects of surgery. Dr Petrushnko has spent a year undertaking a colorectal robotic fellowship. He can now offer this service to the community of the Mid North Coast, which has not been available up until now.

Procedures that can be performed robotically include:
• Hernia surgery; abdominal wall reconstruction, ventral hernia and inguinal hernia repair
• Colorectal surgery; bowel cancer surgery, diverticular disease resections and rectal prolapse surgery.

If you have heard of or considering robotic assisted surgery for your condition, don’t hesitate to discuss with Dr Petrushnko at your upcoming consultation.
